Made with Love

In Harmony with Mother Earth

Products

At Critter Colony, we love God, our family and friends, Mother Earth, and all creatures great and small. We are striving to use our land to its fullest potential by planting native plants, as well as vegetable and herb gardens, that provide food for us, our family and friends, our pets, and wildlife. We practice natural management of our land to reduce dependency on polluting machines and chemicals.

Our pets, both our working pets (chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits) and free-loaders (cats, dogs, and hermit crabs - LOL), are named and treated like part of the family. They’re raised with respect and love and are given as much freedom to roam and live together in social colonies as we can manage. We get as much, if not more, love back from them in return.

PROJECTS

Beginning in April 2018, we will be selling free range, farm fresh eggs curbside at our little hobby homestead and in June 2018 we expect to have our first litters of Holland lops ready to go to their homes (with pedigree to show or start a 4-H rabbitry of your own or without pedigree as loving pets).

In the future, we may have other products and services available. At this time, we use up all the nutrient-rich fertilizer our chickens, guinea pigs, and bunnies create to grow our fabulous gardens; and when we clean out our coop/rabbitry, we use the straw to provide a thick, weed-blocking mulch on those gardens to reduce our need for pesticides and manual weed pulling.

We practice square foot gardening in raised beds and will be trying cover crops of grains this fall/winter. We have a variety of fruit-bearing, native trees and shrubs planted all over the terraced hillsides of our backyard and the chickens devour the weeds and grass between and around them, so we don’t have as much to mow. We are always growing, learning and trying new things. We welcome your support, encouragement, advice and questions at any time!

Colony

Meet your makers:

Our chicken flock consists of 12 hens and one little bantam cochin rooster. The flock is an eclectic barnyard mix of brown, white, blue, and green egg layers. Please visit our Colony page to learn more about the individual chickens and their unique personalities and stories.

Our pedigree Holland lop rabbitry consists of two does and one buck. We believe they should be able to move and live freely without the confines of factory breeding cages. Therefore, our rabbits live together in a colony setting, which was the inspiration for our business name.

Our family has also opened our loving arms to a number of other rescue and non-rescue pets, including cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hermit crabs, and fish on occasion, with whom we share a  deep emotional bond of love and support for one another. Meet our fur, fin, shell and feather babies on the Colony page!
